These were "Flags of Honor" and each flag represented a soldier from Tennessee killed in Iraq. There were dozens of them, each with their own story...the age and cause of death stated plainly..."Killed by mortar fire" "Killed by roadside bomb in Fallujah" "died from wounds sustained in enemy mortar fire"
Their faces, young and familiar, seemed destined for better epitaphs than this. As this administration has done their best to hide these images from our minds, it felt good to see this small community recognizing them and sharing their stories.
As i walked back to the car, i thought about these men and women and their families and how we are all connected and how war can never bring peace. For this reminder, I was grateful to this town and happy to have stumbled my way into it...
